tonight i saw jesus
in my rearview mirror
he was on the side
of the road in montgomery
and looked just like
he always did
in all those paintings
except that he was
a bit thinner on top
and a lot dirtier
which i guess was
just from all the shit
that's been dumped
on him recently
i couldn't really tell
if he was hitchhiking
or just walking along
it all happened too fast
but it wouldn't have mattered
because i wasn't looking
out for him and besides
i didn't have room in my car

Such sarcasm! I like it, especially “from all the shit that’s been dumped on him recently” and ending with “besides I didn’t have room in my car”

I like this poem too. Rob, it looks like you have a new series of Jesus poems!

I wonder about using “always” in line 6. The next line says: “all those paintings,” and the two “all” constructions don’t seem to live in harmonious juxtaposition.

Love the last line.

like julie-the ‘i didn’t have room in my car’ line struck me as well…as well as the fact that you weren’t looking out for Jesus–and the fact that you didn’t capitalize any references to Jesus as someone else might, yet, you still note that he is burdened by the worries of countless beings…i’m not sure about your religious inclinations, but think that when one believes in a higher power, we’d like to think He is looking out for us, always…your line might mirror the thoughts of billions who expect to be looked out for, but forget to look out for others (not speaking for you, just conjecturing)…i’m obviously still a beginner but think this poem is great…

This is one of my favorite poems of yours, Rob. I remember your reading it at Satori last fall. The specific details — “in my rearview mirror” and “in montgomery” — make it for me. And, of course the last five lines.

This is a bit late in coming, but I, too, like this one - especially the last line. I do have to disagree with Sue’s comment about always/all in lines 6 and 7. There’s a way in which the “belaboring” of al/all intensifies the image, associated as it is with ‘all’ those nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings and reproductions of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane.

Anyway, I like it.
