With apologies to Dr. Roddy, who was a brilliant teacher of the German language, for butchering the language that I have grown to love.

I will Understand You

Ich will dich verstehen.
Ich sehe dich auf der Straße
Ich sehe, dich sich von jeder ab wenden.
Alles is dieses for dich.
Ich erinnere mich an dich.
Ich weiß, warum Sie sich drehen.
Ich verstehe Sie.

Nathan,

So you’re writing in German. Terrific. I’ve got to brush up on my German.

German is definitely a beautiful language. The words are always such a delicious mouthful to say. I really wish I remembered more of the language so I could get all of your meaning here, but I think you’ve made something that sounds beautiful. I really love the simplicity and straight-forwardness of what I do understand, as well as the use of repetition. I hope you’ve sent this to Dr. Roddy! I think he’d like it.

Nathan, I don’t know German at all yet I get the sense that this is another of your tender romantic poems. When I read it aloud, even with my ignorant pronunciation, it sounds beautiful.

I’m guessing the speaker saw an old lover on the street, remembered them together and then saw the person look back. I like the simplicity of it, but am not sure I’m getting all the words. Such a subtle scene, that speaks volumes.
