facing upstream
on a stone in the middle
of a smoky mountain stream
that splashes over the edges
gurgles between the rocks
gathers into pools
and murmurs its lazy way
through the woods and hills

i pause for a few moments
savoring the peaceful sounds
of water changing colors
from clear shimmering
above a creek bed of
browns and greys
to the silvery white
of mini waterfalls
and back to clear again

and for a moment
i am wordsworth
communing with nature
just out of her reach
close enough
to perceive her wonders
but far enough away
to stay safely out of touch

a collection of butterflies
congregates on a nearby stone
and amid all of this
natural grandeur
was the look on
my daughter emma's face
as she looked down on them
and just out of earshot
mouthed the words

they are so beautiful

This is such a great summer poem. The “peaceful sounds / of water changing colors” is a lovely synaesthesia. I can close my eyes and hear exactly what you mean. I like the comment on Wordsworth in stanza 3 as well. I don’t know if you meant it that way, but I found the “out of touch” line at the end of the stanza a bit humorous. Your final image of Emma is indeed beautiful.

Rob, I really like what you’ve done with sound and color. The reader is “in” nature — and feels a part of all of this.

I like the “collection” of butterflies and the “smoky” mountain stream.
